Today I have been reflecting on a time as a missionary when I was called to serve in Austria for 1 ½ years in the German language. I felt so inadequate. There were missionaries in my 2-month immersion program who spoke fluent German, or had studied several years of it, and here I was stumbling over my own two lips to get one sentence out. It was intimidating to say the least.
The night before I flew out to Austria, I was on my knees literally sobbing in prayer and pouring out my fears to God. “How can I teach a people about the gospel I love when I can’t even speak their own language?” As I prayed, these beautiful words flowed through my mind bringing peace and clarity: “Fear not, I am with thee: oh be not dismayed; for I am thy God and will still give thee aid. I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand; upheld by my righteous omnipotent hand.” This is taken from a verse of one of my favorite hymns “How Firm A Foundation” and scripture Isaiah 41:10.
When I heard these words in my mind, great peace flooded over me. I knew then God was watching over me and knew my every need.
I relied on this scripture throughout my mission and I reflect on it often today. These words have brought great comfort through hard times, enabling me to rise to each occasion. #lighttheworld
